Are you a fan of the movies? If so, are you one who scrutinizes every detail of the set, the wardrobe and the action? Many people are so fanatic about films that they notice every little detail; sometimes those details are deliberately enhanced. We know, for instance, what James Bond drinks, and how he likes it made. It’s all part of the story. So, where do watches come into this? Well, let’s take a look at one very bankable star to begin with: Angeline Jolie, a major box office draw in Hollywood right now. Have you seen the ‘Lara Croft Tomb Raider’ box office smash? Have a closer look – what is that on Lara Croft’s wrist?
It’s a Tissot Watch, one of the latest models with the T-Touch technology, a suitably futuristic model that is in vogue with the film. It doesn’t stop there, however, for Miss Jolie notably wears Tissot watches in several other films, thanks to an endorsement agreement. She wasn’t the first, either: James Stewart, in the Hitchcock classic Rear Window, also wore a Tissot, and he was in good company for the brand was endorsed by none other than the late, great Elvis Presley!
Speaking of Elvis, he was one of the first to get involved with product placement in terms of men’s watches when he wore a Hamilton Ventura in the film Blue Hawaii in the 1960’s. The reissued model made a reappearance in the famous Men in Black films, much to the company’s delight. Furthermore, in the 1993 film King of the Hill one of the main characters is a salesman for the Hamilton Watch Company in a story that highlights the problems of the Great Depression in the USA.
Using films to gain added publicity is a popular routine in the world of watches; it is particularly so where men’s watches are concerned, the exception being the Angelina Jolie endorsement. It makes sense because it gets the watch brand name across to a great number of people for little expense. How much Tissot pays Miss Jolie to wear its watches is anyone’s guess, but rest assured she is not the only one. Next time you settle down to watch a movie pay attention to the lead characters, and look closely at the watch on their wrist. It could be the same one that you wear every day!
