Ever since digital gadgets made into the average human life, the watch has become an option. There seems a watch (or, clock) in almost anything and everything – from your juicer to your washing machine and micro-waves to the mobile phones and computers. None particularly needs the watch today to tell the time.

Besides, a large chunk of them are in the seriously expensive category. Yet – you wonder – how the watch companies pump in huge loads of money to show their faces on the pages of the magazines – some of them with largest circulations. Power watch adverts are also not hard to come by. All these show the industry is right now booming and watches are big business today.

A not-so-humble opinion would be – It’s all about clubbing together; about a sense of belonging, to the same clan or league. People actually portray their respective mindsets through their choice of dressing (it also applies to food and lifestyle but that’s not what we are at right now) and the watch just fortifies that.

Price of a watch is, definitely, a defining factor here. Men like to show their worth through their watches, including societal stance. One can’t drive his Beemer or Jaguar inside the restaurant; that’s where the watch comes useful. It is good for making covert statements.  Over the last five years (give or take another couple), watches are making it big and the sector is facing extraordinary growth is solely due to this reason!

Another factor that’s pushing the watch industry forward is we all like a little extra among standard arrangements. When a watch does something more than its primary function of telling the current time (also, in some cases, the day and the date), we all feel nice about it. It’s men’s innate struggle for technical delights that does it. There’s really nothing more that need being said, apart from the fact that some indeed ran into spending thousands after marvellous, technical wizardries, that often holds them back from using the watch for the real purposes.

This is where affordable luxury watches kick-in; a market dominated by the Japs. The real high-end products come up to – in some cases, even exceeded – the Swiss standards. But, at a price not even a tenth! A large chunk of them are quartz, but when you are up to some very high precision pro-level usage, mechanicals don’t stand a chance. They are good for everyday use (including complications like perpetual calendar and chronograph); if you are with Nasa, you would perhaps want a spaceship that sits neatly on the wrist. In that case, you got no choice other than to go for quartz accuracy. This is what dominates the glamorous, high-octane world of PRO-s!
