Isn’t it a beautiful watch? The silver hands on the black dial look just great. What I really like about this watch is the placement of the sub-dials and the date window. It really makes the whole watch stand out and look great. I am sure Seiko must have experimented with the palcements and chosen the best when designing this watch. The result is just pure beauty. The band is a genuine Seiko Calf leather band, which feels great. If you’ve ever seen one in person you would agree that even the band is really beautiful. All in all its a great looking watch.

Now lets talk about the functionality: the perpetual calendar is correct until February 28, 2100. Thats long enough isn’t it? It adjusts the date correctly for leap years as well. The watch has 232 parts in it and is powered by the world’s smallest ultra-sonic motor whcih is just 0.4 mm thick! The motor provides power for the 101 parts in the mechanical gear trains of the Perpetual Calendar. The way it works is : the calendar is controlled by a photo sensor which upon recognizing a certain mark on each gear judges the correct day, date, month and year (while adjusting for February of leap years as well). The technology is just amazing, and for the price this is a certain bargain. It combines the mechincal complexity of many of the high-priced watches with the innovative Kinetic technology. So it is still powered by the movement of your wrist but unlike other mechanical watches – the power reserve here is up to 6 months! so even if you don’t wear the watch for 6 months it will continue to work. Actually there is something even more amazing here – the Seiko Auto Relay technology. If you don’t wear the watch for some time  the watch goes to sleep. So the hands stop moving (while the date, year, month continues to advance). But this doesn’t mean the watch has lost count of the time. It is just sleeping – but it still knows the time! Just move the watch a little (now that can be even after 6 months) and it will move it hands automatically to the correct current time! Amazing isn’t it? It is technology like this that makes Seiko one of the innovators of the watch industry.

1 comment on “Seiko Perpetual watches – exactly how they work

  1. I have a Seiko perpetual calendar watch. It is around 25 years old. I changed the battery around 3 years ago. That was amazing. But I have not worn it for about a year-and-a-half now and it is not working. I have been shaking it now for around 20 minutes and still no movement
