Q. Dear Gonzo,

A low budget, plenty of spare time and my boyfriend’s upcoming b’day made me look for a good watch online (my friends told me about the discounted rates) and that’s how I landed on Creation watches. This is also how I came across your posts and recommendations and it’s been a while I have been following your posts with interest. I never knew so many criteria come into play while making a selection but that’s beside the point; I had a hard time finding a good watch under $100. To summarize, I want to gift my BF a quartz watch under $100 but it must look like a mechanical watch. And I want it to make my boyfriend happy.

A.

Hello, pretty lady. Despite your graceful overture, I find your choice mildly distasteful. You want a mechanical look but not a mechanical inside? How about that? It’s not to say I have no respect for quartz; it’s just that when you want a quartz watch, be frank about it. From your query, I understand that you have developed a fascination for automatics, which is good and I’m sure you will be back in your beau’s next birthday to get him a true mechanical watch.

But then again, my job is to provide you with your choice; not induce knowledge or teach you about morality. If you want a quartz watch with a mechanical look, so be it. At best, I can back up my recommendation with logic, which, I guess, will be helpful if you need to explain your beau why you chose it and not another. Certainly, you can’t be so candid about a low budget.

In my humble opinion, you must go for the Stuhrling Concorso Raceway. Sporty features any day look good on a man, even on the pot-bellied and roundish types; so it’s a safe bet. It looks pretty luxury with its Breitling Navitimer influence and therefore, very much suitable for sophisticated surroundings. For you see, the basic determiners for a men’s watch are functionality and style but at a low budget, you need compromise for one of them, for most of the times. The Concorso incorporates both the factors and also keeps it gorgeous and impeccable, also without compromising on the material, which is stainless steel.

Again, in my humble opinion, your BF will like it for its power to put up with his inevitable daily grind. The systematic chronograph display is all about speed; show me man that doesn’t like speed? He’s going to be happy you gave him a thing that will help him to enjoy thrill. Besides, you are gifting him Swiss; now, that’s again something you really can’t expect under a hundred dollars.
